The Perfect Sensory Companion

The Perfect Sensory Companion

From the get go we wanted Tiggy robes to provide comfort and practicality for all children.  However, from experience, we know it’s always tricky finding clothes that are soft and comforting for our little ones who are Autistic and have specific sensory needs.  Here are more the tailored aspects of the product that could make them suitable:

Soft, Sensory-Friendly Materials: Many children on the spectrum struggle with fabrics and thread due to their heightened sensitivity. The feel of fabrics can be a significant factor in their comfort. Tiggy's robes are made with high-quality cotton. When cared for properly your Tiggy will maintain its soft fluffy feel (please see our care guide). We have chosen to use 100% cotton thread on all seams as we know synthetic thread can prove an irritant for sensitive skin.

Soft Cotton Tags: Tiggy robes feature soft cotton tags that aren’t bound with synthetic thread or heat. This eliminates another common sensory trigger, making it easier for sensitive children to wear them without irritation or discomfort. Each Tiggy comes with a name tag for “hand me down” purposes so in the event your child still feels sensitive to the neck label and requires removal, the name label has been placed within the skirt of the robe so as not to rub directly on their skin.

Attached Belt Strap: Tiggy robes come with a thick belt strap that is attached and stitched into place at the correct anatomical level. The fixed belt makes it easier for children that are still developing fine motor skills to manage their robe and learn to “tie” without frustration . It’s also a great feature that avoids losing the belt (a win for mums).  The thickness and quilting of the belt helps it stay tied with a single knot, helping little hands to develop their skills in time. Our hope was to create a sense of independence and ease for little ones who are still developing their life skills without frustration.

Oversized Fit: Tiggy robes have been designed with an oversized fit that provides plenty of fabric especially in the arms and hood. The concept of this was that often children with additional sensory needs require the space to withdraw from lights, noises and sometimes just the environment they are in. Our aim was to provide additional comfort for children who seek reprieve or have a preference for more relaxed clothing. The loose fit in the body also offers a calming sensation similar to being wrapped in a blanket. We know (again from lived experience) that swimming lessons and beach days can sometimes result in meltdowns due to the nature of sensory overload, Tiggy robes have been designed with this in mind.

Pockets: We all love pockets lets be honest! Tiggy robes come with two large pockets for storing small toys, sensory objects, fidget tools and goggles, you can even stuff a Jelly Cat bunny in them! This was a feature that we knew we had to have but didn’t realise the entire benefit of until our Autistic possums started storing their rock collections in them! This feature is great because often kids on the spectrum require objects with them to feel secure. This allows that precious rock, feather or other comfort object to have a safe place to be kept within easy reach.

Durability and Routine: Children on the spectrum often thrive with routine and predictability. The durability of Tiggy robes means they can handle repeated use and laundering without losing their softness or comfort. A familiar, reliable piece of clothing can help create a sense of stability and comfort, which is especially beneficial for children who are sensitive to changes in their environment.

In conclusion, Tiggy robes, with their soft fabrics, sensory-friendly details, and practical features, could be a great choice for children on the Autism spectrum or those with sensory sensitivities, providing both physical comfort and emotional reassurance.
